Anzac Celebrations

We have been learning more about why we have ANZAC day and how we celebrate the day. So many of the students in the class discovered that they have family links to the wars in some way or another and many students came to share these links in class. We saw some real war medals that Isaiah brought in with photographs of the soldiers who earned these medals. Many students shared photos and stories of their family members who fought or died in the wars and Dale showed us a photo of his mum when she visited Gallipoli and AZAC cove. These shared experiences made ANZAC day very real to us.

We were reading this book when we discovered a link to Clevedon School as one of the soldiers named in the book was a teacher who taught here in the early 1900s.

We also read some poems and other books.

Here is the poppy garden that we have created to show that we will always remember our brave soldiers.

Maths

We are learning to find patterns in and around the school. We went for a walk on the field and in the school grounds and took photos of some of the patterns that we saw along the way.

Patterns can be seen in plants too. 

We have discovered that there are patterns everywhere in around our school!

Do we add rubbish to landfills?

We are learning about rubbish and the impact it has on the environment.  We read books, watched video clips and we launched investigations to find out how we contribute to the problem. 
Looking at what we have in our lunch boxes helped us to understand how easy it is to add waste to the landfills. Look at these photos to see how much rubbish we created in just one day. All of the rubbish in the bowl came from our lunch boxes. 

Look at all the wrappers we had. We even counted 13 chips packets. 

Here are some of our lunch boxes. We took the photos ourselves.

So what can we do to eliminate some of the rubbish we create? 

• use zip-lock bags (they are reusable)
• use small containers for smaller items
• use paper bags because they will break down in the soil
• food scraps can be fed to the chickens or can be composted

Being a Learner

We were thinking about ourselves as learners. Here you can see our Y-chart explaining what it will look like and sound like when we learn. The last area shows what we like the environment to sound like. Some of us enjoy learning with some music in the background and others enjoy a quiet space. 

We are learning about being resourceful.

Room 14 watched the following video. It helped us understand how we can also be resourceful.

Blurb: Kondi is determined to make a galimoto - a toy vehicle made of wires. His brother laughs at the idea, but all day Kondi goes about gathering up the wires he needs. By Nightfall, his wonderful galimoto is ready for the village children to play with in the light of the moon. 

Here we are creating objects of our choice with pipe cleaners. We worked with a buddy and we had to create one object between the two of us. Each pair had 6 pipe cleaners to work with. This is what we made:

We twisted our pipe cleaners to make a rainbow. A reindeer is taking shape.

A new style of handcuffs.

We made double head bands.

An alien in the making.

Reciprocal Learning

We have been learning about being reciprocal when we learn. We watched this clip to help us to understand what reciprocal means. 

How to work as a team

We discussed what helped the penguins, ants and crabs to work well together and came up with these ideas.

they listened to each other they worked together they didn’t argue they were organised they were thinking about how to be safe	they listened when they were asked to help they all worked together they were thinking about a plan it didn’t matter that some were smaller than the others they didn’t argue	they moved straight away when the one crab called them over they were thinking about what they had to do they all did what they needed to do they were organised

We then tried to be like these animals and work together as a group to keep a ruler up. We were allowed to use one or two fingers on one hand but we couldn't hold it. We also had to ensure that everyone could touch the ruler.

We used reflection to help us understand why it wasn't easy to work together:

• we argued
• we didn't listen carefully to each other
• we had to try more than once
• we had to change our plans

Next time we will:

• listen more carefully to each other
• take turns to speak
